LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

Along with writing, designing, and taking pictures for Laingsburg High School's newspaper, The Informer, and yearbook, The Looking Glass, I also am the co-editor in chief of the two publications. Last year (2014-2015) was my first year in the Publications class. However, right away, I caught on, wanting to do more and more to make our yearbook and newspaper the best they could possibly be.

My Publications advisor, Rachel Mercer, chose me and my friend Hanna Angst to be co-chiefs. Usually, the chief is someone who has been in the class for more than one school year, but due to my quick taking to the journalistic tasks she thought I was the right fit for the role. It is also uncommon for someone to be the chief of both the newspaper and yearbook. As a team we are in charge of making sure the newspaper and yearbook are top notch and professional. Every day we are given the tasks of editing other reporter's stories, make design decisions, and give younger staff members advice on how to do things.

Along with making the everyday decisions, I oversee much of the photography in the class. I try to make sure that all of the photos are placed well and that we have the absolute best pictures, so our audience can have the best experience possible. Overall, being able to be a leader in both the yearbook and newspaper classes has taught me many valuable things. I have learned patience when teaching new staff members important skills, and I have learned how to make sure a team is working well together.

Double Duty: Being in charge of two publications can be stressful. You seem to have a thousand different things to do, along with a soccer practice after school, and a math test that you still need to study for. However, despite the stress, I wouldn't trade my experience as a student journalist and leader for anything. I have learned so many things and have met so many amazing people. The photos above show our 2014-2015 yearbook and some of the covers that feature my photography. When I look back on the last two years as a journalist I can truly say I have had the time of my life.
